Swinemoor Primary School is a strong and successful Chatta Hub School, championing the transformative power, accessibility, and impact of the Chatta approach. Situated in Beverley, East Yorkshire, the school has a strong commitment to ensuring every child develops the language and confidence needed to thrive across the curriculum.
Why Chatta?
Swinemoor began working with Chatta in 2020 recognising its potential to transform pupils’ understanding and use of vocabulary across the curriculum through audio-visual modelling, scaffolding, and language-rich teaching in all subjects. From the outset, staff saw how Chatta strengthens vocabulary, spoken language, and writing outcomes, while also building pupil independence, deepening understanding, and supporting consistent, high-quality teaching.
Since embedding Chatta across the curriculum:
- Pupils speak with greater confidence and clarity.
- Vocabulary knowledge and conceptual understanding have grown rapidly.
- Teachers use Chatta’s structured tools to support lesson design and delivery.
- Standards have risen in all subjects, with improved outcomes for all learners.
The school has seen significant gains in vocabulary use, writing fluency, and subject mastery. Pupils are more independent, articulate, and successful, particularly those with additional needs, and from disadvantaged backgrounds.
"Chatta is simple, powerful and transformative for all pupils, strengthening vocabulary use and understanding, oral language skills, subject knowledge and removing barriers to writing. It's a central aspect of teaching and learning at our school and I encourage school leaders to visit to see the impact for themselves in classrooms."
Jane Sharp, Deputy Headteacher, Swinemoor Primary School
