Speech and Language is ‘the single biggest issue’ affecting a child’s development.
Many children never catch up and this early gap is dragging down school results and making it harder for teachers to deliver the curriculum for all children.
By the age of five, most children should be able to speak in full sentences and use most of the everyday words that adults use.
However, in England and Scotland, almost one child in four (23%) does not meet this expected level of language development.
